A discovery journey through the Wipptal valley
Wolfsthurn Castle
Wolfsthurn Castle sits gracefully on a hill in the village of Mareit, a five-minute drive from our hotel in Ridnaun. It’s the only baroque castle you will find in South Tyrol, and its vast complex houses the South Tyrolean Regional Museum of Hunting and Fishing, as well as impressive, sumptuously furnished rooms.
Castle Reifenstein
Going even further back in time, there’s a 12th century gem waiting to be discovered near Sterzing. Starting off from Erlebnisort Gassenhof, a twenty-minute drive will take you to Castle Reifenstein – the best-preserved castle in South Tyrol. Spared from the attacks and destruction that many other castles faced throughout the centuries, Castle Reifenstein features several highlights, including its renowned Green Hall, a bathing parlour and a torture chamber.
Place of pilgrimage: Trens Holy Mother
Another sight in our vicinity is the Maria Trens sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage in the locality of Freienfeld, south of Sterzing. For centuries, people from near and far have been making pilgrimages to honour the “Trens Holy Mother”, and traditional processions, masses and petitions still take place every year. By visiting the site you will have the chance to see the statue of the Virgin Mary, which is housed in a specially built chapel adjoining the church.
