We have reached Level 3!
The Sustainability Label South Tyrol Level 1 was awarded to the Gassenhof team only in 2023 — a significant incentive to continue our efforts. Now, we have reached an important milestone: With great joy, we announce that we have received Level 3, officially recognizing us as experts in sustainability!
Good job, team!
What is the Sustainability Label South Tyrol?
This highest level is not only internationally recognized and "GSTC-recognized" according to the "Global Sustainable Tourism Council" criteria, but it also represents our holistic philosophy of sustainability. We fully meet all nine criteria in the areas of ecology, social responsibility, and culture. This includes our active contribution to the protection and preservation of cultural heritage. We focus on local products, collaborate with local artisans, and ensure that people with physical disabilities can move freely within our premises. We also encourage our guests to switch to ecological means of transport and promote sustainable mobility among our team and suppliers.
This success strengthens our commitment and motivates us to continue our determined path towards a sustainable future — for our guests, for the Gassenhof and its team, and for the beautiful piece of Earth we call home.
Sustainability measures at Gassenhof
However, compensating for our carbon footprint is just the first step. Reducing it is equally if not even more important. This is why the pleasant warmth that welcomes you inside our hotel now comes from a woodchip-powered plant, while all the electricity is sourced from local hydroelectric power plants. In another light-bulb moment, we decided to replace traditional bulbs with energy-saving LED ones throughout the hotel!
We take care to minimise the waste we produce, and to carefully dispose of it. This is why you will find no single-use plastic bottles at Erlebnisort Gassenhof: for your hikes, we will lend you washable and reusable drinking bottles. It’s you who decides when the room should be cleaned, and bed linen and towels changed. Through all these measures, we have been able to save considerable amounts of plastic, energy, detergent and water.

HEART AND HOMELAND
Preserving South Tyrol’s culture and traditions
For us here at Gassenhof, guests are more than just that – they’re part of our large, diverse family. Just as we are more than just a hotel: first and foremost, we are a vibrant part of Ridnaun’s wonderful landscape.
We uphold our traditions – from culinary specialities to guided hikes to help you discover our regional flora and fauna, we love to share our local knowledge and customs with you, so you can really immerse yourself in the experience and take a piece of Gassenhof home with you.
Indulge with our cuvée at dinner, knowing that you’re also doing something good. For every bottle sold, we donate €2 to a local charity and other initiatives we’re happy to support, such as the fire brigade volunteers, the local music band or the carol singers who go around dressed as the Three Wise Men and raise funds for children in need during Epiphany.
One of the things our employees especially value is feeling at home here at Gassenhof. Most of them are local, and those who come from afar can count on cosy rooms here on the grounds. This saves them some commuting, making for a happy staff as well as a cleaner environment.
Breathe in the scent of fresh Alpine herbs, dance to the rhythm of a Ziachorgl accordion on our Wildnalm alp and delve into the secrets of local cuisine – we’ll help you gain real insider knowledge of our beloved homeland!
We put our heart and soul into preserving our beloved homeland South Tyrol and its rich cultural heritage. A heritage of which the listed Gratznhäusl chalet is part and parcel. This historical building from 1375 is our pride and joy: we have renovated it with the greatest care to offer you an authentic atmosphere in which to spend your holiday and enjoy the taste of Rahmmus, a traditional South Tyrolean dish that we regularly cook for our guests in the chalet’s 700-year-old kitchen.

There’s no taste like home
The fruit, vegetables, meat and fish delivered to our kitchen haven’t come a long way. Besides, our chef’s greatest secret is no secret at all: local tastes better. We get most of our ingredients from local farmers, so we can spoil your palate with the best flavours of our land. Once a week, we offer you a six-course dinner of your choice made entirely with seasonal, locally grown produce. 100% South Tyrolean food – and we bet you can taste the difference! And because even small steps count, once a week we forgo meat and pamper you with a delectable vegetarian menu.
Ridnaun – a green tourism destination
The municipality of Ratschings, to which Ridnaun belongs, is a member of Alpine Pearls – a consortium of 19 destinations in the Alps that have united in their commitment to sustainable tourism and green mobility. The challenge the Alpine Pearls have taken on focuses on supporting car-free holidays by guaranteeing unrestricted mobility at the destination through convenient transport services and environmentally friendly alternatives.
Did you know that most of tourism-related pollution actually comes from the journeys to and from the holiday destinations? Therefore we recommend guests of Erlebnisort Gassenhof to come by train and bus. The nearest railway station is in Sterzing, only 12 km away from here, and the bus stops right outside our door. We also offer guests the option of car-sharing our hotel’s electric car to explore South Tyrol in a more sustainable way. Those arriving with their own electric car are welcome to use our charging stations (for an additional charge).
We are delighted that so many of our guests are eager do to their part to protect the environment. If you need any assistance in planning your train or bus journey, please contact us at any time – we are here to help you enjoy a rewarding car-free holiday in South Tyrol!
